SHR Black's New Millennium

Black's New Millennium:  What's in a name.  Duke was our first Boykin Spaniel and was our heart and soul.  He is solely responsible for teaching us all about Boykin Spaniels and causing us to fall deeply in love with this rare breed.  Upon his passing, we were able to obtain Millie.  Since she was a new start for us with Boykins, we came up with the New Millenium.  We call her Millie, named for Millie Latimer of Rockn'Creek Kennels,  www.rockncreekkennel.com , for all her hard work and dedication to the breed for so many years.
Millie is quite a dog.  First off, Millie is the first Boykin Spaniel to have ever run in a British Working Test.  The only such test held in the United States is right here in Oxford, Mississippi at Wildrose Kennels, www.uklabs.com .  She was only ten months at the time and still was able to hang in through the third round out of five in the event.  She showed strong propensity for upland as well as line manners, honoring, and obedience.  All a prerequisite for a British Working Test.   She has quickly aquired her SHR title in the HRC/UKC hunt tests.  She went 4 for 4 and received her title by 10 1/2 months of age.  Her next leg will be two fold.  She is going to start on both her Upland Title (UH) and her Seasoned Title (HR) next spring.  Many people have asked, why not go for it this fall.  The answer is quite simple, HUNTING SEASON.  To us, hunting is first and foremost.  We will start with her first actual hunt at a dove hunt with Mallard Creek Outfitters, www.mallardcreekoutfitters.com.  We also have already booked some quail hunts at a game preserve in Alabama.  Since the demise of the quail population in the South, our only option is preserves, but they make for excellent training grounds for any upland dog.  Then comes the true test, DUCK SEASON.  We look forward to this, and will be hunting her from both a boat and also from a blind over flooded fields.  We might get in a timber hunt or two also.  So check back once hunting season starts for updates.

Duke of Keswyche

Clay got Duke from his brother, Dr John Black of Pontotoc, Mississippi in September of 1991.  He was out of Keswyche's Lady of the Lakes and Edisto Curly Bear.  The best words to describe Duke, our gentle soul.  Everyone, every dog, every cat that he ever came in contact with, he considered a friend and wanted to play with them.  He was a natural for upland, never requiring any effort to hunt close.  He was a little brown rocket in the dove fields.  Living in Northwest Tennessee most of his adult  life, there were many lab owners in the area that were amazed by his natural abilities.  Duke would also point.  Many question this, but some Boykins do actually point and Duke was one of them.
He was also a diver.  He would dive under water after a wounded duck.  We estimate that he has dove as deep as three feet after his quarry, and always came back with the bird.
Duke passed in July of 2004 and has a special place in our backyard.  Suzanne can often look out and find Clay and Millie sitting down there talking with Duke.  He is the guiding hand for Clay and Millie.
Duke, we love you, and you will always be in our thoughts and our hearts.
